In this guest post we asked Ellie Thompson, editor of MyBaba, to outline some of her favourite trends in children’s fashion and tell us which eco-friendly kids’ clothes brands we should be turning to this autumn / winter season…
Eco-friendly kids' clothes - Ellie Thompson’s Autumn / Winter Kids’ Fashion Trends
With the heatwave fast becoming a distant memory and winter well and truly knocking at our door, it’s time to archive the children’s summer shorts and dresses, and layer up for autumn with this season’s cosy organic knits and more.
Here are my seven top tips on keeping the littles warm and cosy AND super stylish this season…
1. Embrace Colour in your Kid’s Winter Clothing
Colourblocking is back in a big way this season, with many children’s t-shirts, sweaters and jackets embracing the bold primary colour trend, especially for boys.
For easy colourblocking in kid’s clothes, you can layer top halves with long-sleeved t-shirts, sweaters or knits in earthy colour tones, as the fashion world’s love affair with nature continues.
And on that note…
2. Nature-Themed Prints
Head to eco-friendly kids’ clothing brand Lilly + Sid for a great selection of layers, with a few bright and bold nature-themed prints thrown in.
For something a little bit special when it comes to knitted jumpers, check out Cashmirino for their beautiful cashmere.
Team casual children’s winterwear with a pair of warm-lined boots, hi-top trainers - or a pair of Doc Marten unisex lace-up boots with the all-important side zip.
3. Fun AND Practical Kids Jackets
There’s so much choice in terms of outerwear for boys and girls this year, with parkas, puffers, teddy coats and bombers taking centre stage.
And I was pleased to see one of my favourite new(ish) trends making it into the new season – and a trend I think every kids’ wardrobe should make room for – the super-cute varsity jacket.
Kids’ rain jackets and puddlesuits can be both eye-catching AND eco-friendly with brands like Muddy Puddles, Frugi and Lilly + Sid offering some bright and fun new designs this year.
Made from recycled plastic bottles, otherwise destined for landfill, it’s reassuring to know that you can protect children from the elements while protecting the planet!
4. Kids’ Loungewear Gets Premium
It just wouldn’t be winter without some super cute children’s loungewear to snuggle up in following an afternoon spent splashing in puddles.
Previously the preserve of adults, premium loungewear for kids is now a thing and this year is bigger than ever across collections for both boys and girls.
The smart money is on organic cotton gender-neutral loungewear options which last the test of time and can then go to younger siblings or other family members.
Turtledove has a lovely set featuring a fabulous furry bear design, which kids will love.
Staples include matching joggers with hoodies, and we’re seeing the emergence of more luxurious fabrics too - like this velour set (pictured above) which has a matching baby romper for the cutest of sibling twinning - also still a thing this season!
5. Top Winter Clothing Trends for Girls
Winter wardrobe updates for girls include colourful dresses and casualwear which will look the business teamed with a pair of chunky Chelsea boots. Also think oversized jumper dresses, dungarees and jumpsuits in florals, bold or retro prints.
6. Top Winter Clothes Trends for Boys
For boys, denim, chinos and shirts are where it’s at, and I love Kite Clothing’s collection, with the versatile organic cotton navy corduroy trousers my faves. And check out La Coqueta for their luxurious selection of occasionwear and smart shoes, especially for boys.
7. Children’s Christmas Outfits
As we creep closer to Christmas, you’ll see occasionwear beginning to drop across the high street and designer outlets.
Girls can choose from a plethora of party frocks and skirts made from tulle, sequins, chenille and glitter. Why not team a special outfit from Frugi with their Party Skater Dress and matching tights, with a soft faux fur gilet and some festive ballet pumps.
And as we’re talking festive season, don’t forget to invest in some traditional tartan to get you in the Christmas spirit. Italian kidswear brand ll Gufo has a glorious selection to choose from and Turtledove’s organic brushed cotton style is super cosy and warm and will take you through Christmas and beyond.
With so many great eco-friendly kids clothing options this autumn and winter, as highlighted by Ellie, the hardest thing will be choosing between them.
At least you'll know when you shop any of the brands at My Little Green Wardrobe you can have peace of mind that all of the clothing is kinder to the planet, the people who made them and your little one's skin.
With love,
Lucy
